As you look around this site, you'll see some of the things you have to take into consideration as you plan your edible yard. One of the planning services I offer is coming out to your place, looking around, and helping you understand just what you have and what its potentials are.
The first thing you'll be doing in planning your edible yard is just watching - observing what's going on in your yard. You'll be doing a lot of that after I leave, but I'll show you the kinds of things you need to be looking for.
For example, you'll need to notice the way the shade moves through your yard across the day. This, coupled with knowing where the four cardinal directions are on your land, will help you figure out where your first garden areas should go. The diagram to the right shows you what's going on with the sun's "apparent" motion across the sky in Texas. Using that - and your careful observations - you'll be able to figure out what trees in your yard shade what pieces of ground, at what times of day.
Another thing I'll do for you - or teach you how to do - is use Microsoft PowerPoint™ to prepare a map of your yard that you can copy and fill in for each year's crops. To see what that's all about, go to my Planning the Garden page. To see examples of these planning diagrams, take a look at the diagrams I prepared in order to plan my front yard gardens and my back yard gardens.
The real planner of your gardens, however, has to be you. I strongly recommend that you use the principles of Permaculture as the basis for your designs. You can find a list of references about Permaculture on my Permaculture References page. Especially note the list of Austin-specific references on that page; Austin has a wealth of permaculture and permaculture design experts, all of whom are happy to teach their skills and share their knowleddge.
For the record, I should note that I'm not a trained permaculture designer; I'm just a guy who's using the principles of permaculture and organic gardening to turn my yard into garden, and I'd like to help you do the same thing. Why? Go to my page of references about Transition to find out.
